The Air Training Corps (ATC or Air Cadets)
We are a youth organisation for students from Year 9 to Year 13. You can join Air Cadets when you are aged between 13 and 15 years old.
Air Cadets is a voluntary, disciplined youth organisation, with an Air Force/military framework. We are part of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, which also includes the Cadet Corps (Army Cadets) and the Sea Cadet Corps (Navy Cadets).
We have a distinct military framework, from wearing an Air Force Uniform to doing Air Force drill, and this makes us very unique compared to other youth organisations in New Zealand.
About No. 1 Squadron
We are No 1 (City of Wellington) Squadron – one of approximately 50 Air Cadets units around the country.
We were the first ATC unit formed in New Zealand, back in 1941. Originally we were formed to train young men for their time in the Armed Forces, but now we are purely a volunteer youth organisation for males and females.
We have approximately 60 members, from first-year cadets to officers. We pride ourselves on being the best we can be, providing high-quality training to all of our members.
What Do We Do?
We meet every Thursday evening, from 6:20pm – 9:00pm during school term time. At ATC you will participate in a parade, and then have lessons designed to give you the skills to fully enjoy all of our weekend activities.
We have regular weekend activities throughout the year. You might do something such as:
•Go on a field exercise or a tramp to use your bushcraft skills
•Experience flying a plane, glider or helicopter
•Test your aim at target shooting with the Squadron’s rifles
•Attend a social or sporting activity
